Council members Omar Roman and Elizabeth Villafranca were sworn into the Farmers Branch City Council on May 20, the city announced, and both delivered remarks encouraging civic engagement.
Elizabeth Villafranca, sworn in as the District 4 council representative, thanked residents and urged them to participate in city boards and commissions: "This is your city," she said, adding, "There is only us, neighbors, families, and friends, working together to build a stronger, more connected community." Villafranca also encouraged residents to consider serving on a board or commission.
Omar Roman, sworn in as the District 1 representative, thanked supporters and reflected on his first election and re-election. He noted the turnout and the historical nature of recent results, saying that with his and Villafranca's elections "this marks a historical moment in Farmers Branch history, whereby for the first time in our city's history, we have 2 elected Hispanic representatives to represent the 54% Hispanic." Roman also thanked city staff and volunteers who supported campaigns.
Why it matters: the swearing-in completes the council's membership after the May election and signals the newly seated members' priorities on community engagement. Both new members emphasized resident involvement and outreach.
What comes next: both members will assume full council duties and represent their districts in council business; Mayor and ceremony participants presented each with a council pin and certificate of election.
