New Central moves in; board signs off on summer change orders and connector-road design

Lebanon Community School Corporation officials told the school board on May 20 that the new Central Elementary has earned a certificate of occupancy, allowing staff to occupy the building, and the board approved a suite of construction change orders and planning steps to finish campus work this summer.
"We now have that building under our insurance umbrella," said Mister Dennis, a district staff member presenting construction updates, announcing the certificate of occupancy and explaining that utilities and insurance for the new building will move to the district’s operations budget.
The board approved 12 change orders covering projects across the district. Major items highlighted by staff included: demolition of a long-serving portable at Old Central (scheduled early in the project); asphalt and sidewalk work and additional parking for Harney Elementary funded from savings in the bid package; installation of a sump pump and the electrical conduit to serve it at the new transportation facility; and a backflow preventer discovered late in the transportation facility work. Dennis told the board that while the sump pump itself was a moderate cost, running power to it added substantial expense because conduit and power must extend to John Bart Road.
Staff also asked the board to authorize design work on a short connector road to link the road off John Bart Road that serves the new Central campus and transportation facility with Grant Street near the middle school. District leaders said the connector will improve campus circulation and pedestrian safety for families with students at Central Elementary and Lebanon Middle School.
An open house for the new Central Elementary building is scheduled for June 2 from 5 to 7 p.m.; ribbon cuttings for Harney and Perryworth will be scheduled after students return so students can participate. The board approved the change orders, demolition plan and the motion authorizing the administration to engage an engineering/design firm to prepare construction documents for the connector road.
