Ashwaubenon park board recommends naming Element Way park for Jerome 'Jerry' Van Sistine

The Village of Ashwaubenon Park and Recreation Board voted May 20 to recommend that the new park on Element Way be named for Jerome “Jerry” Van Sistine, a longtime local official and state legislator, and send that recommendation to the Village Board for final approval.
The recommendation followed a nomination by board member Tracy Flucke, who said she had contacted Van Sistine’s family and that they were “honored” by the suggestion. Flucke told the board that Van Sistine lived nearby, served as a town and later village board member, and was a state senator for many years.
Board members discussed two procedural options for naming parks — an internal nomination routed through the Park Board and Village Board or a public naming contest as the village previously did for Sand Acres Park. Several board members expressed support for naming the Element Way site for Van Sistine while also saying the village should confirm with the family how the name should appear (Jerry vs. Jerome).
Board members made a motion to recommend the name and the board voted in favor; the motion passed and the recommendation will be placed on the Village Board agenda. The board chair said staff would contact the family to confirm the preferred form of the name before the Village Board acts.
Because Village Board approval is required for official park names, this Park Board action is a recommendation rather than a final designation. The board also noted that the naming must meet the village’s naming criteria and could be returned to the Park Board for reconsideration if the Village Board requests it.
The board did not set a public-notice timeline or a formal dedication date at the May 20 meeting; members said they would follow up with staff and the family for details if the Village Board approves the recommendation.
