Council refers SafeBuilt contract and related housing-staffing questions to Building & Housing committee

Councilmember Weiser asked that the SafeBuilt contract be returned to committee so council members could review proposed language before the March renewal deadline. Mayor Ginsburg said the circulated draft represented SafeBuilt’s proposed terms but was not the administration’s negotiated version; the administration indicated it would seek changes tied to staffing decisions in the housing department. The mayor said he had been waiting for a salary band decision for an existing community development coordinator position; he described personnel matters as tied to the administration’s preferred contract terms.
Council and administration disagreed on timing. Councilmembers asked for committee review and for the contract to be considered at the next meeting if possible; the mayor said he would negotiate changes with SafeBuilt but did not commit to a decision by the end of the week. The Building & Housing committee scheduled a meeting two weeks before the next council meeting and will include the SafeBuilt contract and the community development coordinator salary-band matter on its agenda.
No contract was executed on March 3. Councilmembers said they wanted to see a negotiated administration draft and have time for committee discussion before council action. The mayor noted some staffing-related negotiations belong in executive session due to personnel confidentiality; the committee referral is intended to produce a committee recommendation to council.
