Spokane civil service announces new fire recruitment site, merit tour and upcoming firefighter testing results

At the Spokane Civil Service Commission meeting on May 20, 2025, the chief examiner reported that the city has launched a new fire recruitment website and created dedicated online recruitment pages for both police and fire, and that the department recently completed a round of merit-tour outreach.
The chief examiner said, “First off, we have a brand new fire recruitment website that is up and running. Thanks to Paxton Powell, our marketing coordinator, for getting that going. We now have dedicated recruitment online space for both police and fire. So, really excited to have both of those up and going.”
The update said staff completed the first round of the 2025 merit tour, with outreach at several off-site locations. “We did do an incentive to have some people coming to our tables this year and spending time with us by offering an option to raffle in for a gift card so we had over 70 people come and talk to civil service about all things civil service,” the chief examiner said. The commission was told a second round of the merit tour is planned for the second half of the year.
The chief examiner also reported that the commission’s office administered a free firefighter test over the prior weekend; test-taker numbers were not yet available. “We don't have numbers yet on how many we had but we should have those shortly,” the chief examiner said. Staff said recruitment is open and that the city is recruiting for two possible fire academies, which could increase near-term hiring if both proceed.
Commissioners were also told that civil service staff were not in the commission chamber because they were working at the police Lieutenant Assessment Center at the National Guard Armory. “So it's not that they didn't want to be here; it's that they're busy working,” the chief examiner said.
The commission did not take formal action on the items reported. The chief examiner said updated test counts and further recruitment details would be provided when available.
