The Commerce City Council voted to authorize the city to apply for the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority grant program to buy a mobile camera trailer with live streaming capability and up to 15 stationary license plate readers.
Chief Corleo (title as presented at the podium) told the council the proposed grant totals approximately $72,000, with the state program covering 80% and the city responsible for the remaining 20% (roughly $12,000). He said the mobile trailer could be deployed at large public events and the fixed readers would be placed at major entrances and thoroughfares such as Live Oak Street, Washington and Monroe.
Council members asked operational questions including whether the readers would capture every plate that passes a location. The chief answered those systems “would capture license plates of vehicles traveling on a public roadway” and said similar systems have helped other jurisdictions locate missing persons and fugitives. Council and staff clarified that the planned technology is intended for crime prevention and investigative support and not for automated traffic enforcement of moving violations.
A motion to authorize the application and participation in the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority grant program passed by voice vote. Staff will submit the application and, if awarded, return with required documentation and a plan for placement and operation of the equipment.
