The Beverly City Council on May 19 voted unanimously to create a school zone for the North Shore Education Consortium schools on Sawyer Road and directed the Department of Public Services to install the appropriate signage.
The matter was considered first in the council’s Public Services Committee, which reviewed a request to establish the school zone and recommended approval. Committee members noted the high volume of buses and proximity to the high school and argued the zone was appropriate to protect students and staff.
In the full council report-out, the committee’s recommendation was presented and the council voted 9–0 to approve the request and instruct the public services department to install signage along the designated stretch of Sawyer Road. Councilors said the change addresses a gap in traffic controls near the consortium’s campus.
No ordinance change was required; the action is administrative and directs city staff to place school‑zone signs and markings. The council did not attach a separate timeline beyond standard public‑works scheduling for sign installation.
