Updates on playground replacements, Ruth Hardy permitting and splash pad repair timeline

At the May 19 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting staff provided several project updates, including plans to replace playground equipment at Desert Island, permitting status at Ruth Hardy Park and a splash pad repair project that has been placed out to bid.

Desert Island playground replacement and Ruth Hardy Park - Staff said project teams met with vendors to refine scope and pricing for the Desert Island playground replacement. The team wants a larger, higher-quality installation to "bring community up to that neighborhood," and is reviewing alternative suppliers and features, including canopy lighting for safety. - Ruth Hardy Park playground remains in permitting review; the contractor addressed plan-check comments and construction was estimated to begin between June 9 and June 16, with a target completion date of Sept. 1, assuming no further permitting holds. - Staff said they are pursuing Prop 68 funds to add pathway solar lighting and to redirect funds toward design and lighting if the state allows a change of use; updates will follow when the state responds.

Splash pad and other facility work - The downtown splash pad repair project is out to bid; staff expects to award the contract by July and has allowed a 90-day contractor turnaround for construction once awarded. Staff said more scheduling details will be provided after award. - Victoria Park has a proof set of restroom plans scheduled to go out to bid in July.

Other notes - Staff reported continued park maintenance work after recent transition of the park maintenance team into the department, including bench restorations, graffiti removal, fountain and ADA stair repairs.
