St. Mary's County seeks public feedback on comprehensive plan; survey open through June 30

County staff told the Hazard Mitigation Planning Board that the second round of public engagement for the St. Mary's County comprehensive plan is underway, the online survey is live through June 30 and has received 577 responses so far.
Jessica Andritz, a St. Mary's County staff member, told the Hazard Mitigation Planning Board on May 21 that the county's comprehensive plan update has entered a second round of public engagement and an online survey is open through June 30.
The survey link is posted at the county website (www.saintmaryscountymd.gov) under Public Agencies > Land Use and Growth Management > Comprehensive Plan Update. Andritz said the project page contains a brief introduction and a “Participate Now” button that directs residents to the survey.
The county is supplementing online outreach by attending regularly scheduled community events rather than holding separate visioning meetings, Andritz said. She reported 577 respondents to the survey as of the morning of May 21, up from 288 responses during the first round of engagement. Staff attended the Southern Maryland Heritage Festival recently at Sotterley and plan to staff booths at other upcoming events, including a Barnes at Newmarket event, Flag Day activities, Saint Clement’s Island Heritage Day and Juneteenth events, to solicit input in person.
Why it matters: a comprehensive plan sets land-use and growth-management goals used by county departments and planning consultants to guide zoning, transportation and hazard mitigation priorities. Andritz said county staff will work with the project consultant to compile survey results after the survey closes on June 30.
Board members did not take formal action on the comprehensive plan at the May 21 meeting; the report served as an update on outreach and response levels. Staff indicated they will present compiled results to the consultant team following the survey close date for incorporation into the draft update.
