The Cannon Falls School Board approved adding a fourth‑grade teaching position for the 2025–26 school year after administrators reported rising third‑grade enrollment that would create class sizes above the district’s guideline.
Business manager Josh told the board that third grade enrollment stands at 92 confirmed students, with a couple registrations still possible. At that level, class sizes would run around 30–31 students per section; district guidance lists the top of range at 28 students per class. Josh estimated a fully loaded teacher cost (salary plus benefits) at about $82,000.
Administrators recommended hiring the extra teacher so the cohort would carry appropriate class sizes into fifth grade. The board approved the position by motion. Trustees noted that the district had built a budget assuming new positions could be added if enrollment warranted and that adding the teacher is consistent with the district’s stated class‑size objectives.
Superintendent and business office staff will proceed to post and hire the position; the cost is included in the preliminary FY26 budget.
