Committee approves salt-season contract appropriation and expects about 10,000 tons next winter

Kane County staff recommended and the Transportation Committee approved an appropriation to cover the county's winter salt contract for the 2025-26 season and to permit purchases up to the contract allowance.
Staff reported that on April 23 five bids were opened for the 2025-26 salt season. The lowest qualified treated-salt bid was from Cargo Incorporated at about $9,383 per ton, and a dry-salt low bid of about $8,350 per ton came from Salt Exchange of Aurora. Staff said the county had used lower-priced suppliers in FY25 and had stocked up when prices were low.
"We are anticipating the use of about 10,000 tons of salt next year," the staff presentation said. Even with a light winter the county used about 9,500 tons this season, staff added. To cover contract flexibility, staff recommended a total appropriation of $1,125,960, which represents authority to purchase up to 120% of the contracted amount though staff said they did not expect to use that much.
Staff said the county-hosted bid covers about 14 townships and that municipalities and other counties often piggyback on the host contract to secure competitive pricing. The committee voted to approve the appropriation and contract award recommendation.
Next steps: staff will finalize the contract with the recommended bidder and proceed with procurement and distribution planning for the winter season.
