The Senate Committee on Health and Welfare adopted a set of technical amendments and reported House Bill 525 as amended. The measure would create a statewide commission to study uterine fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis and advise the governor and the Louisiana Department of Health.
Representative Walters, the bill sponsor, told the committee the commission would “evaluate functions and activities of existing groups, focused primarily on fibroids collaborating with stakeholders” and would also address PCOS and endometriosis. Walters said the commission would serve as an advisory body to the governor and LDH.
Committee members asked whether other states have similar commissions; Walters replied that some states have comparable bodies. Senator Cloud asked for a fuller presentation, and Walters offered to provide the sponsor’s slide deck to the senator.
Senator Boudreau praised LDH for participating in the bill’s stakeholder process and moved to report the bill favorably. The committee recorded three supporting testimony cards from Ochsner Health, the Conference of Catholic Bishops and a private citizen; with no objection, the committee reported HB 525 as amended.
The amendments adopted were described in committee as technical and included language clarifying that each member of the commission would be appointed by the governor and subject to Senate confirmation.
