The Waunakee Village Board approved an ordinance amending section 70-2-11 of the village code to continue a bicycle-registration program, eliminate the $1 fee and add electric scooters to the registration requirement.
Police committee members presented revisions after reviewing the current program and noting the registration role is mainly educational and useful in returning lost or stolen bicycles. Police staff told trustees they often distribute free license stickers at events such as the bike rodeo. The ordinance change removes the nominal fee and broadens registration to address motorized scooters and other emerging personal-transportation devices.
Trustees discussed outreach to increase registration participation; Trustee Nyla Lafleur and communications staff plan web and school outreach. The board approved the ordinance by voice vote. Officials said they do not intend to stop children from riding if not registered; the program is primarily an educational and recovery tool.
