Committee approves face-change replacement of Walter Beinecke plaque on New Whale Lane

The HTC Sign Advisory Committee approved a face-change replacement of a bronze plaque honoring Walter Beinecke on New Whale Lane at its May 20, 2025 meeting.
Staff member Holly Backus presented the item on behalf of the Walter Beinecke family, noting the original bronze plaque was installed in February 2005 and the family is proposing a same-size, same-verbiage replacement to restore legibility. Backus said the family plans a celebration in October that will coincide with the 300th anniversary of the Congregational Church.
Committee members said they had no concerns about the like-for-like replacement. Mark Gatone moved to approve the face change; Paul Wolf seconded. Roll-call votes were recorded as aye from Ben Norman, Kevin Koester, Mark Gatone and Paul Wolf.
The committee’s approval permits the applicant to proceed with the replacement; staff indicated the plaque had been on site for more than 20 years and that prior approvals likely existed when it was originally installed.
