Village officials announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency selected Waunakee for a Brownfields cleanup grant worth $837,000 to clean up the former Wanna Clean dry cleaner at 205 South Klein.
Village staff said the 0.3-acre site housed two dry-cleaning businesses between 1992 and 2013, has been vacant since then and is contaminated with chlorinated volatile organic compounds. Grant funds will support community engagement and remediation activities, officials said. The application was prepared by Ayres and Associates with assistance from village staff and attorney Vanessa Weishardt.
Officials said the award is funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and called the grant competitive; staff involved in preparing the application were recognized during the meeting.
