Luxemburg-Casco adopts new weighted-grades policy in high school handbook to encourage rigorous coursework

The Luxemburg-Casco School District Board approved revisions to the high-school handbook on May 19, adding a weighted-grades system intended to incentivize students to take more rigorous, college-level courses.
District staff described a multi-meeting process that included teachers, counselors and three students; the group recommended weighting core courses (English, math, science, social studies and world languages) with a 1.2 multiplier and other qualifying courses with a 1.1 multiplier. The policy also specifies that remedial college courses or technical-college classes that do not transfer to UW-Green Bay would not qualify for weighted credit.
Administrators said the changes were intended to reward rigor and better align grade weighting with college-transfer expectations. A staff member explained the district used UW-Green Bay transfer guides to determine which technical-college courses meet the standard for transferability.
Board discussion acknowledged not reaching 100% consensus in committee but emphasized clarity for students and families on what qualifies for weighted status. A motion to approve the handbook updates was made and carried.
Staff said the district will publish the revised handbook language and provide guidance to students and parents on how weighted grades will be applied to course choices and transcripts.
