City staff presented background showing that a recent applicant had requested a 3,200‑square‑foot variance and had argued it would be cheaper to purchase a larger prefabricated kit. Staff and the city’s contractors contacted several manufacturers and local builders and found that a 3,000‑square‑foot building would cost less than a 3,200‑square‑foot building when other characteristics are equal. The Planning & Zoning Commission recommended keeping the current 3,000‑square‑foot limit.
During a brief public hearing, no members of the public spoke in favor or opposition. A council member thanked staff for their research and then moved to deny the zoning amendment. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously, keeping the city’s accessory‑building maximum at 3,000 square feet.
