Commissioners approve epoxy floors for extension complex classrooms and asbestos removal at Girl Scout building

Codington County commissioners on May 20 approved work to epoxy flooring in two classrooms at the extension complex and to remove asbestos tile and epoxy flooring in the Girl Scout building at Memorial Park.
The vote matters because it moves forward facility improvements and an asbestos abatement that county staff said must be performed to meet safety and usability needs for a converted cabin space.
Steve, the county facility manager, presented quotes for the work. The classroom work (B and C classrooms in the extension complex) was quoted at $14,212 to remove carpet tile and adhesive and apply epoxy. For the Girl Scout building, asbestos tile removal was quoted at $4,232.75 and epoxy installation at $5,707.24.
"Currently, right now, what I have here is to do the, B and C classrooms... I feel that by putting the epoxy on there, we'll keep everything maintained a lot better," Steve said. Commissioner McElhaney moved approval; Commissioner Gable seconded and the motion carried.
Staff said the Girl Scout building is being converted into a cabin and that asbestos tile requires procedural removal. Commissioners asked about budget availability and staff said funds will be budgeted and monitored.
The board recorded no additional conditions on the work. Vendors and contract details will be handled through the facilities procurement process.
