Commissioners approve $4,670 county payment to upgrade highway oil pot

Codington County commissioners voted May 20 to approve a $4,670 county payment to upgrade an asphalt/oil pot used by the highway department after the unit purchased last year proved unable to pump the county's road-sealing fluid.
The approval matters because the upgraded unit, the highway superintendent said, will heat faster, stay hot longer and provide better controls that will speed patching work and reduce crew downtime.
Randy Falvey of the county highway department told commissioners the original machine did not meet needs because it could not pump the fluid's viscosity. After the seller and manufacturer engineers examined the unit, they concluded it would not work and offered an upgraded machine. Falvey said the upgrade includes a larger diesel engine, insulation to retain heat, cab controls and overnight plug-in capability.
Falvey asked the board to cover $4,670 of the difference. "So I'm requesting that we spend that $4,670," he said. Commissioner Gable moved the motion to approve; Commissioner Schwier seconded. The board voted in favor and the motion carried.
Falvey also reported routine highway operations, including crack sealing on County Roads 11 and 19, strip-down of older dump trucks, motor grader work, ditch and right-of-way reconstruction on County Road 7, and seeding for riprap work on County Road 6.
The board recorded no additional conditions on the purchase. The seller will cover shipping, setup, painting and an amber strobe light as part of the arrangement.
