The Town of St. John Park and Recreation Board on May 20 approved a series of contracts and purchases to complete work at Gates Park, advance Timberlane Park renovations and maintain other park facilities.
The board approved a $159,021 contract with New Toys for Timberlane Park renovations through Sourcewell, and members said using Sourcewell produced additional savings so the work did not need to be rebid. The motion carried 4-0.
Staff reported Gates Park's three phases are substantially complete: phase 1 (path loop) had its punch list finished by contractor Site Services; phase 2 (pickleball courts and shade shelters) was under punch-list work by Gary Up Construction; and phase 3 (lighting) is largely done but requires camera re‑aiming and final sealing by Midwestern Electric. Sam (parks staff) said Site Services "just finished the punch list" for the path and that final invoices will be on future agendas.
The board approved purchases to finish infrastructure and equipment: $8,621.44 for audiovisual equipment for the community center (procured through Amazon), $10,920 for Lake Hills parking-lot sealcoating from Cam Seal Coating, and $14,055 for fiber-optic cable for Gates Park cameras from Zorflo Technology. Sam said the fiber line is intended to support cameras and future speakers; he clarified the Wi‑Fi signal from the building is not expected to provide broad public Wi‑Fi coverage across the entire park.
A motion to purchase the playground equipment through Sourcewell was made and carried 4-0; a separate motion approved the fiber-optic purchase (moved by Mary Roberts, second by Eric Villisca) and was carried 4-0. The audiovisual purchase was approved on a 4-0 vote after a motion by Eric Villisca and a second by Pat Connolly. The parking-lot sealcoating contract was approved with a 4-0 vote.
Staff also said Timberlane Park will be put out to bid on June 13 and that the town received a $75,000 grant from the county toward that project; an award recommendation is expected at the next meeting.
