Supervisor of Elections requests $795,000 advance for special election; commissioners approve

The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners voted 5-0 on May 20 to allocate $795,000 in advance to the Supervisor of Elections to cover the costs of a special election for two seats, with the understanding the State Department of State will reimburse those costs under its reimbursement program.
Maria Mayer of the Supervisor of Elections’ office told commissioners the $795,000 figure is essentially the actual cost for the primary special election and estimated the county may be about $5,000 below that total. Mayer said the office has assembled a complete reimbursement package and will submit it promptly but cautioned the state processes reimbursement on a first-come, first-served basis and provides no firm timetable. "They don't give us a time, so what we have to do is submit the reimbursement request, and it's a first come, first served basis," Mayer said.
Commissioners approved the funding request after brief discussion; staff noted the county will seek reimbursement from the state for the primary and later submit for the general election costs as well. Staff also warned it is possible the reimbursement for the general election may not arrive before the fiscal year close.
