Middle-school presentation urges Revere to expand halal options in school meals

A middle-school student presented to the School Committee on May 28 asking Revere Public Schools to expand halal-meat options in school lunches to improve inclusivity for students with religious dietary needs.

The student defined halal meat and said her research showed families sometimes face difficulty matching school menu options with religious requirements. She identified several vendors (named in her presentation as Sodexo, Cisco and Maraware) that, she said, supply halal meals to some Massachusetts districts and argued that offering halal choices would promote equity and reduce barriers for Muslim students.

School staff responded that the district will change food-service providers in the fall and that menu options will be revisited with the new vendor. A staff member noted that finding local suppliers at competitive prices has been a challenge and that larger districts, such as Boston, may draw a majority of available supply; however, staff said halal items were included on field-day menus this year and the practice was well received.

Committee members thanked the student for the presentation. No formal motion or vote on menu changes took place; staff asked for the student’s input to be shared with the food-service team as they finalize next year’s menus with the incoming contractor.
