A Susan B. Anthony Middle School student presented a proposal on May 28 to launch a Model United Nations program at the middle-school level and asked the School Committee to consider funding the club’s delegate fees, an advisor stipend and transportation.
Gabrielle Glocos, who completed the project as part of an independent-research course, described the educational benefits of Model UN and said the high-school program has produced demonstrable gains in communication, writing and leadership skills. "It is one of the best educational experiences I have ever had," she told the committee, and she proposed an initial funding plan that would cover delegate/advisor fees, a stipend for the club advisor and transportation to conferences.
Gabrielle said she has already identified a staff advisor — a Susan B. Anthony geography teacher who has agreed to take on the role — and asked the committee to consider full funding for a weekly after-school club that would prepare students for regional conferences. Committee members praised the presentation and encouraged Gabrielle and staff; Chair John Kingston said he would follow up with the student after the meeting.
The presentation was part of the school's independent-study public-presentation requirement; the committee took no formal vote on funding during the May 28 meeting but expressed support and asked staff to follow up with details on costs and scheduling.
