Howard County OKs $13,500 in jail ceiling repairs, $3,682 carpet purchase for EMA facility

Howard County commissioners voted to approve ceiling repairs at the county jail totaling $13,500 and to fund a $3,682 carpet replacement at the EMA Berkeley facility.
The maintenance department told commissioners the ceiling repairs stem from damage expected while installing heat pumps at the county jail. "We allotted for 30,000. The total that we're gonna need is $13,500. I can't approve this since it exceeds 5,000, so I'm seeking approval to move forward for this during the project," said Mister Stonestreet of the maintenance department. Commissioners then voted by voice to approve the expenditure.
Stonestreet said crews will fully remove and replace ceiling sections in the Horseshoe area and Unit 5 hallway because those areas were already heavily damaged and had rust. He also told the board that other major mechanical needs at the existing ("old") jail are being removed as part of the renovation and that remaining systems, including the generator, are still under warranty.
On a separate item, Stonestreet asked commissioners to approve replacement carpet for temporary quarters at the EMA Berkeley facility for Janice Hart and staff. "The total cost for the carpet in there is $3,682. It definitely needs replaced anyway, and we will be doing painting, co base, and other items while we're out there," he said, adding a request to pay the cost from the Koom Cat Building upgrades account, 1138.47243. The board approved the payment by voice vote.
These approvals were taken while the county continues other renovation work at the jail related to a previously presented heat-pump project. The actions recorded at the meeting were voice votes in which commissioners answered "aye."
