Board approves MEA contract, salary actions and multiple staff hires and transfers

The Murphysboro CUSD 186 Board of Education voted May 20 to approve a collective bargaining agreement with the Murphysboro Education Association (MEA) and considered salary increases for nonunion, noncertified and administrative staff.
During the meeting the board approved the MEA contract by voice vote; all members present voted in favor. The board also took action on salary recommendations for nonunion, noncertified and administrative employees, moving them forward as part of personnel actions discussed in closed session and the open meeting.
In a series of personnel motions the board accepted resignations (including Margie Smith, lunchroom monitor at Carothers Elementary School, and Addison Osmond, assistant cheerleading coach at Murphysboro High School), accepted a prior resignation submitted by a cook (Matthew Valino) and approved multiple certified and classified staffing assignments and transfers. The board approved certified placements including Jessica Murphy (Carothers Elementary music), Emily Lawrence (Carothers third grade special education self-contained), Leila Craig (Carothers fifth grade), Kristen Flick (Johnny Logan art) and other certified assignments and co-sponsor appointments for yearbook and activities.
Athletic and extracurricular appointments and summer-school staff were also approved, including assistant and volunteer coaches and a list of summer school teachers and aides. The board additionally recognized 10-year contractual service for Ashley Ellis, Latrice Wood, Jesse Popejoy and Nathan Henkel.
Motions to approve the MEA contract and the slate of personnel actions passed unanimously; specific votes were recorded individually by roll call during the meeting. Some personnel items were discussed in closed session under Section 2 of the Illinois Open Meetings Act before being acted on publicly, consistent with statutory provisions for employee personnel matters.
Board members directed staff to finalize contract documents and implement the approved personnel changes; the board did not detail compensation amounts for each nonunion employee during the public portion of the meeting.
