The City of Kankakee on May 19 approved a resolution to accept an addendum to its contract with Pierce Manufacturing that increases the city’s prepaid balance by $28,766.21 so an ordered aerial fire truck will be delivered roughly 10 months sooner.
Why it matters: The council previously prepaid for the vehicle and received a discount tied to a longer delivery schedule. City fire officials told the council the shorter delivery timeline reduces that prepaid discount and requires the additional payment on delivery.
Chief LaRoche told the council the city had contracted in September 2023 to purchase a vehicle from Pierce and had prepaid with a discount tied to a 44-month delivery. "Since the delay has been reduced by 10 months, that discount needs to be reduced by $28,000 which since we are prepaid for the vehicle, we're gonna have to owe additional $28,000 on delivery," he said. The resolution language lists the addendum amount as $28,766.21. Chief LaRoche also clarified the vehicle is an aerial truck, not a pumper, as the item was initially described on the agenda.
Alderman Ozinga moved the resolution; Alderman Jones seconded. The council approved the addendum by roll call, 13 ayes, 0 nays.
Council discussion included frustration from one member about the procurement and vendor communications; no change to the contract terms beyond the authorized addendum was made. The resolution directs the city to execute the addendum and accept earlier delivery under the adjusted price.
The council’s action closed the purchase adjustment at the meeting; staff will execute the addendum with the vendor and proceed toward delivery under the revised timetable.
