Resident asks Waukee council for stop signs and traffic study after crash near Peachtree and Laurel

Brad Deaton told the City Council during open forum that traffic speeds have increased in his neighborhood since a Target store opened nearby and that his wife was recently involved in a crash at Peachtree and Laurel. He asked the city to install two stop signs on Laurel or consider other measures such as a speed bump to improve safety.
Deaton said vehicles are treating the road “like it's the Indy 500” and that drivers frequently exceed the 25 mph limit. He said children in the neighborhood wait for a school bus nearby and that one child nearly was struck. “I don't want anybody to lose a kid,” Deaton said, describing a prior fatal crash he witnessed elsewhere and urging preventative action.
City staff responded that the city begins such concerns with a traffic study to identify the appropriate remedy and that staff would collect Deaton’s contact information and follow up. “We always kind of start this process with a traffic study to figure out the right way to address it,” a city staff member said. Staff said they would get back to Deaton with next steps.
No formal action was taken at the meeting; the council directed staff to initiate the standard traffic-calming review process.
