Council rezones 6.67 acres for new public safety building at West Grand Avenue

Port Washington — On May 20 the Port Washington Common Council approved rezoning about 6.67 acres at the northwest corner of West Grand Avenue (State Highway 33) and County Road LL to Public and Utility Lands (PUL) to accommodate the city’s new public safety building at 1540 West Grand Ave.
Robert Harris, the city’s director of planning and development, told the council the city had acquired the land and that the rezoning is needed because the property’s current B2 zoning with an Arterial Gateway (AOG) overlay is commercial in character; PUL is the appropriate permanent designation for government facilities. “With the acquisition of the land and the approval of the public safety building, the property needs to be rezoned,” Harris said.
Plan Commission had recommended approval at its prior meeting, and staff told the council the rezoning is generally consistent with the comprehensive plan. Council members approved the ordinance on the second reading by voice vote. No members of the public spoke for or against the rezoning during the public hearing.
The rezoning clears a land‑use hurdle for the project; the building, procurement, funding and construction steps were not addressed in detail at the meeting. Staff indicated subsequent permitting and construction planning will follow the reclassification to PUL.
