Joliet celebrates inaugural CERT graduates; city registers team with FEMA

The City of Joliet recognized the inaugural class of its Citizens Emergency Response Team, with organizers saying 28 people enrolled and 18 graduates attended Tuesday’s council meeting for official recognition.
John Lukanzek, who led the presentation, said the class completed roughly 27 hours of training and the group logged more than 750 volunteer hours during the program. Training topics included household and workplace disaster preparedness, the Incident Command System, basic utility and fire control including live‑fire exercises, naloxone administration, disaster medical operations, disaster mental‑health, light search and rescue, radio communications and certified weather‑spotter training.
Lukanzek told the council the Joliet CERT team is now registered with FEMA and the state. He said the program emphasized “diversity, integrity, compassion and respect,” and noted the city achieved representation from all five council districts in the first class. Organizers said a new evening class begins June 10 and a daytime class on June 14, with follow‑on classes planned at Joliet Township High School in fall and spring sessions.
Council members and the city manager congratulated the graduates; several members of the class and a civics group attending the meeting were invited for photographs at the dais.
