The Benton County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to abate outstanding property taxes on two parcels that the City of Atkins recently recorded in its name.
Atkins Mayor Bruce Visser and City Administrator Scott Florian said the city acquired the parcels in 2020 for municipal uses (one intended for city park and another in the Stone Ridge addition) but the deeds were not recorded at the time, leaving the developer listed as owner and taxes to accrue. Florian told the board one parcel was redeemed from a tax-sale certificate (approximately $2,675 to cure that certificate) and the other had only a small balance (about $40). The city filed warranty deeds and asked the county to abate the taxes due and exempt the parcels going forward as city-owned property.
The board voted to approve Resolution 25-39 to abate the listed taxes and to mark the parcels as city-owned and tax-exempt going forward. City officials said the parcels will be used for city purposes, including planned sidewalks and park use.
Supervisors voted in favor of the abatement.
