The Village of Dolton Board of Trustees on May 19 approved appointments to the police and fire commission and formed a planning and zoning committee, actions the mayor and trustees said are intended to restore oversight and enable hiring and discipline functions.
Trustees approved Ken Gray, Lester Long, Mark Wolf and Mary Evans to the police and fire commission. Trustee Belcher moved to approve the appointments; Trustee Holmes seconded. Clerk Key conducted a roll call and the trustees voted aye; the mayor announced the motion passed. Two appointees present — including Lester Long and Mary Evans (referred to as Mary Yvonne during oath) — were sworn in at the meeting.
Trustees also voted to create a planning and zoning committee and appoint Dimitri Hardy, former mayor Riley Rogers and Sandra Wells to that committee. Trustee Steve moved the motion; Trustee Tammy Brown seconded. The motion passed on a roll call vote.
Trustee Belcher said restoring the police and fire commission will help with hiring and discipline and “keeps accurate numbers and results and lessens the lawsuits that come in.” Trustee Stan Brown added that a functioning commission is required before the village can hire full‑time police officers.
Ending — The trustees asked the new and returning volunteers to serve; the board said additional committee members would be appointed later and that the planning and zoning committee will begin work on zoning matters the board refers to it.
