BATON ROUGE, La. โ The House Insurance Committee on May 21 advanced Senate Bill 138, which would require health insurance coverage for retired employees of district attorney offices and would authorize funding through a local dedicated sales and use tax.
Committee staff read the bill as sponsored by Senator Klein Peter. Representative Veil told the committee the bill would "require health insurers to provide coverage to retired employees of the district attorney's office, which would be funded by local dedicated sales and use tax." He described the change as filling "a gap" for people who have served in district attorney offices.
The committee considered an amendment (set 3,246) that changes the term "health insurer" to "health insurance issuer" to conform the bill's language. The amendment was posted online and distributed to members; Representative Veil adopted the amendments on the record. Committee members offered no objections, and the committee moved the bill forward by unanimous consent. The hearing record does not show a roll-call vote.
Representative Veil noted the coverage would apply for retired employees "when the retiree is not yet eligible for Medicare." The bill, as explained at the hearing, does not specify implementation details beyond requiring coverage and the funding source identified by the presenter.
With amendments adopted and no objections from committee members, Senate Bill 138 was advanced from committee for further consideration under House procedures.
