Council approves stop sign at Cherokee Drive and Stapleton after resident petition

The Springfield City Council approved a petition to install a stop sign at the intersection of Cherokee Drive and Stapleton after a resident petitioner described the crossing as a safety concern during the May 19 hearings meeting.

Ellen Morehouse, who said she lives at 48 Sundine Circle, presented the petition and noted a mapping error in the paperwork: the petition listed the location under a misnamed street but the map and parcel numbers in the application accurately identified the intersection. Morehouse said she had worked with the traffic commission and councilors before bringing the petition to the council.

Councilors had no questions and the clerk called the roll for approval. The vote passed with all present councilors voting yes and one absent member noted. Councilors who spoke included Councilor Walsh and Councilor Klick Bruce, who assisted residents through the petition process. The clerk announced "petition is approved." The council did not add conditions to the stop sign order during the hearing.

The action directs the appropriate city traffic and public works staff to install signage at the corner; the council did not alter the recommended location as presented by the petitioner. The petitioner asked staff to confirm the correct labeling so the sign installation and mapping records will reference Cherokee Drive and Stapleton.

The item was presented as "Item number 2: Cherokee Drive Stop sign" and was taken up after a brief recess; the roll-call vote concluded the matter.
