Casa Grande — During public comment at the May 20 council meeting, Jerry Shiver, president of the local St. Vincent de Paul conference, told council the organization’s food pantry has seen significant growth and described April service levels.
Shiver said the pantry is open five days a week for three and a half hours each day and that in April it provided roughly 660 grocery carts of food, about 700 boxed food parcels for housed clients, an additional 300 family food bags, and approximately 600 weekly snack bags to unhoused visitors. He told council the total value of food distributed in April “was a little over a quarter million dollars,” and that demand had grown about 200% to 400% compared with five years earlier.
Shiver described the conference as a local, independent nonprofit: “Our conference started, 1988. We're one of 4,000 in the United States, and we are all independent. We are a 501(c)(3),” he said. He asked council to consider St. Vincent de Paul as a partner in future activities addressing housing and related needs.
Council members thanked Shiver for the information. The statements were made during the public-comment period and did not prompt a council action during the meeting.
