County creates electrician position for 911/safety campus maintenance

The Personnel and Compensation Committee approved creation of a maintenance electrician (grade 9) position on May 19 to assign an electrician to the county's 911/Safety Campus.
The Commissioner of Public Works and Engineering told legislators the Safety Campus — which includes the jail, emergency operations center and the new Warrant Building and Medical Examiner's building — currently lacks a dedicated electrician. "We have no electrician assigned to the 911 Campus," the commissioner said, and when electricians are needed there staff must be borrowed from other locations.
Committee members heard the county will defund a vacant maintenance mechanic supervisor (grade 12) position to fund the electrician post and that the new hire would be expected to obtain a license after one year on the job. The department said this creates promotional opportunities for remaining maintenance staff and has a modest net fiscal effect.
Legislators voted to approve the position by voice vote; committee discussion included a request for the department to coordinate on any operational impacts and to follow up about related equipment or vehicle needs if site visits increase.
