David Harden, Dragonfly Internet representative, updated the Bruton City Council on May 19 about the company's plan to bring broadband to the city, saying the company will begin a wireless service June 1 and expects to transition customers to fiber once the partner builds and completes splicing.
Harden said Dragonfly is building fiber in partnership with Alabama Power and that Alabama Power must complete pole changeouts and hanging before Dragonfly can start its fiber splicing process. He said the power company should complete the pole work this month and that the splicing process will take about two months.
"We just still expect to have fiber customers towards the end of the summer or early fall," Harden said. He told councilors about customer interest and implementation steps: about 200 residents had pre-subscribed online, and the company plans to use the wireless product to start service sooner and later convert households to fiber when the line arrives.
Councilors asked logistical questions about billing for streaming services and multiple buildings on a property. Harden said streaming subscriptions are billed by the streaming providers separately and that Dragonfly will offer in-person retail support and setup advice. On serving an outbuilding, he said Dragonfly typically treats that as an extra outlet add with a small fee and supplies routers according to the subscriber's plan.
The council received the update; no formal action, contract, or funding decision was taken during the presentation.
