Julie Cassner, who identified herself as a parent of students at Crystal Lake Central, said girls benefit when they train with boys because the practice improves strength, speed and preparedness. “Girls who train with boys become stronger, faster, and more prepared for real world situations,” she said. She described coed training as building “respect” and better control among boys and said the sport teaches skills that help students handle violent encounters.
Cassner also told the board wrestling is useful for students with emotional or physical needs and said it can be safer than football. She urged the district to support girls wrestling by providing coaches and teams so participation can grow.
The comment was made during the public participation portion of the meeting; no board action was taken during the session on the wrestling program.
