U-46 outlines progress on middle- and elementary-school construction under UNITE U-46

School District U-46 officials on May 19 updated the Board of Education on ongoing and planned construction under the UNITE U-46 facilities program, saying site work and interior work are moving forward at multiple middle-school projects and that two elementary renovation designs are nearing the end of design development.
The update, led by Brian Lindholm, chief of staff, and Dr. Anne Williams, deputy superintendent of operations, covered active work at Hawk Hollow Middle School, Kenyon Woods Middle School, Kimball Middle School and the new middle school planned in Elgin, and summarized early designs for Century Oaks Elementary and Glenbrook Elementary.
Board members were shown photos and timelines for Hawk Hollow, where exterior site work, curbs, sidewalks and parking areas were advancing after a stretch of dry weather; gym flooring had been sanded and prepared for game lines and bleacher installation; and a new school mascot display had been installed. At Kenyon Woods, crews had completed utility installations around an addition and masonry work was underway; plumbing contractors had begun underground work for future restrooms and science labs. Kimball Middle School crews completed an administration-area slab and continued overhead rough-ins and storm-trap foundation work.
Lindholm presented schematic designs for two elementary renovations. The Century Oaks plan, designed by Studio GC, calls for roughly 18,000 square feet of additions and 33,000 square feet of renovations; the design eliminates existing pie-shaped classrooms, creates true hallways and light wells around the library to bring natural light into interior classrooms. The Glenbrook proposal calls for about 14,000 square feet of additions and 35,000 square feet of renovations, adding new classrooms, a library and a gross motor play area; a curb cut for parent drop-off is proposed to help traffic flow.
Officials noted that two additional projects — the Illinois Park conversion and a new elementary school on the former David C. Cook site in Elgin — are in early planning and will be covered at a future board presentation. Lindholm also said Century Oaks and Glenbrook are nearing the end of design development and tentatively scheduled to break ground in late fall.
Officials asked the board to expect continued monthly updates and visual materials, including time-lapse cameras installed at several sites to document progress.
Board members did not take formal action on the construction update during the presentation; subsequent project bids, contracts and change orders were presented separately on the agenda.
