CHSD 155 recognized a Crystal Lake Central student as the district’s first to complete the college-and-career pathway endorsement in education, district staff told the Board of Education.
Assistant/teacher presenters said the new dual‑credit Intro to Education course requires 60 hours of field experience, two team‑based challenges and two dual‑credit courses. Angela Welder, the Central teacher who leads the course, and district staff said students complete 15 hours each observing in elementary, middle and high school settings and that the pathway is intended to recruit future educators and help address teacher shortages.
Ashley Winnicates told the board she completed the 60 field hours between an elementary TLC 2 classroom at Deerpath and a TLC 3 classroom at the junior high and will major in elementary and special education at the University of Wisconsin‑Madison. “I had the opportunity to actually help teach the students and work with them one‑on‑one,” she said.
Staff said the pathway received board approval in February and that next year the team‑based challenges will be built into the curriculum to expand opportunity for more students. District presenters also encouraged students to apply for scholarships such as Golden Apple and noted two scholarship recipients from district schools this year.
