Crystal Lake South students medal at ACES state finals

Two Crystal Lake South students earned top finishes at the ACES Academic Challenge state finals in April, district staff told the CHSD 155 Board of Education.
Brian Adcock, sponsor for Crystal Lake South’s ACES team, said Michelle Lee placed third in biology and fifth in English and Ioana (Johanna) Milashova placed second in English at the Division 1,500 state finals held at Eastern Illinois University. Adcock told the board the competition includes tests in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, graphics, English, math and physics and advances through regional, sectional and state rounds.
The accomplishment placed both students among the highest scorers in their events statewide. “Michelle was third in biology in the state and fifth in English. She was a double medalist,” Adcock said. Joanna (Ioana) Milashova “was second in English at the state finals,” he added. Adcock and others credited English liaison Corey Medwig and biology liaison Renee Kishisky for helping prepare the students for the state competition.
Michelle Lee told the board she will attend the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign and said the medal will help her pursue a biochemistry major and research opportunities. Ioana Milashova said she looked forward to another year competing for South as an upcoming senior.
The district recognized the students during its regular meeting and thanked staff and coaches who supported the team’s advancement to the state finals.
