City of Phoenix staff demonstrates how to operate Skated Alley Program gate

Stacy, a City of Phoenix staff member, demonstrated how to operate a City of Phoenix Skated Alley Program gate in an instructional video provided to the city.

The demonstration focused on the gate's three-way locking mechanism, how each lock is assigned and step-by-step guidance for opening and re-locking the gate. "My name is Stacy with the City of Phoenix, and today I'm going to show you how to operate a City of Phoenix Skated Alley Program gate," Stacy said.

The video explains that each gate uses three locks, two locking bars, chains to hold locks to the gate and drop pins at the bottom to prevent gate movement. "The red lock is for the fire department. The center lock is the community lock. And the final lock is for utilities, emergency access, and city services," Stacy said. The demonstration shows a sample combination lock and advises users to "drop down the little black piece if it exists, align the numbers across the top" (warning that aligning numbers across the middle will not open the lock).

Stacy emphasized how to overlap and thread the locking plates so the gate remains secure when the drop pins are opened. The presenter showed an example of an improperly locked gate where "the utility lock hasn't been looped through the gate and the locking bar," which left the gate hanging low and able to open when the drop pins were released.

For re-locking, the video instructs users to push the shackle back into the lock body, scramble the dials, overlap the plates in the center, slide the lock through the overlapped plates and confirm that the locking pins are dropped into the cement bun in the ground.
