Deputy Superintendent Vince Sheffield introduced Human Resources and Student and Parent Services leaders who briefed trustees on talent, benefits, attendance, and grievance procedures.
Jill Crossley, executive director for talent acquisition, said HR handles recruitment, staffing, contracts, job descriptions and employee separations for the district’s roughly 8,000 employees. Rosa Ramos, executive director of employee relations, described the multi‑tier employee grievance process under policy DGBA and said most grievances are resolved at lower tiers; she reported about 30 grievances received year‑to‑date with only one reaching Level 3 so far.
Ms. Lisa Estrella Batson, assistant superintendent for student and parent services, explained the parent complaint process under policy F and G: informal campus‑level resolution, then Level 1 to the principal, Level 2 to Student and Parent Services (the division typically serves as hearing officer), and Level 3 as an appeal to the board. “We do make every effort to resolve everything…at the informal, the level 1, or the level 2,” Ms. Estrella Batson said.
HR also described a Healthy Living Initiative launched in 2021, multiple insurance plan offerings (traditional and high‑deductible self‑funded plans, voluntary vision/dental/disability), leave administration (FMLA and other leaves) and employee wellness programming. The presenters said online student registration was at about 75% completion (~42,000 students) at the time of the orientation and noted Student and Parent Services manages attendance policy implementation via the state Student Attendance Accountability Handbook (SAW).
Both HR and student services encouraged trustees to direct media or constituent questions through the communications office and offered to provide more detailed briefings on staffing and benefits during budget workshops.
