Council pauses payroll bill after finance flags technical correction; amended introduction calendar adopted 9-0

The Seattle City Council on May 20 unanimously approved an amendment to the introduction and referral calendar to remove council bill 120983 after the city finance office alerted the sponsor to a pending technical correction.

Council President Sarah Nelson moved to amend the introduction and referral calendar to remove item 1, council bill 120983, saying the finance office had identified "a technical problem in the bill" that required pulling it so it could be corrected and brought back for a future vote. The motion was seconded and the clerk called the roll.

The roll-call vote on the amendment was 9 in favor, none opposed. Council members recorded in favor included Hollingsworth, Kettle, Moore, Rink, Rivera, Saka, Solomon, Strauss and President Nelson. After the amendment carried, the council adopted the amended introduction and referral calendar and the consent calendar (with item 1 removed) by roll call; the clerk later asked to affix the council president's signature to the minutes and legislation on the consent calendar.

Council members did not debate the policy substance of council bill 120983 on the floor; the record shows the removal was procedural and described by the sponsor as necessary so finance could submit a corrected bill. The sponsor said the bill will be resubmitted for consideration the following week.

The meeting proceeded to routine business and several proclamations after the votes. The council recorded no related substantive committee report or substantive change to city policy on May 20; the item was removed to allow technical correction.
