Trail counters recorded more than 800,000 visits to Plano trails in 2024

More than 800,000 trips were recorded on Plano's trail network in 2024, presenter Steve Stoler said during a "Stoler on the Street" segment about the city's trail counters. Stoler said the system of 11 counters, placed along more than 100 miles of trails, logs date, time, direction of travel and whether a user is walking or bicycling.
The counts provide local officials and planners with data used to prioritize renovations, plan new trails and strengthen grant applications, Stoler said. "Trail counters record the date, time, direction of travel, number of trips, and if the user is walking or cycling," he said.
Stoler gave additional figures from the counters: more than one-third of trail users in 2024 rode bicycles; about 15,000 people used the trails each week, which he said equates to roughly 2,200 trips per day. The Chisholm Trail was the most-used route in 2024, with close to 231,000 trips, Stoler said.
Stoler said the counters' detailed records help prioritize where repairs or regional connections are most needed and help program staff strengthen applications for grants to improve the trail system. He closed the segment by noting the program would return with further updates: "We'll see you soon for another Stoler on the Street."
