The City Council adopted Resolution R2025‑14 authorizing an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with Navajo County for construction of six lateral fiber connections to the middle‑mile network. City staff said the cost of the connections is $467,138.56 and that the amount has been budgeted for the current fiscal year.
Public works/IT staff explained the county is installing fiber countywide as part of a middle‑mile project and the city aims to take advantage of the county contractor’s presence to extend lateral connections to six city facilities. The project scope listed public works, the wastewater treatment plant, the police department, Frontier Park, the airport and city hall. City hall will act as the hub for the city’s network, staff said.
Staff identified the county’s contractor (e x squared) as the installer; construction for the city laterals is expected to start in the fall of 2025 and likely run into winter, with full service connections anticipated in the following year, staff said. Chris DeWalt was present as a backup for technical questions.
A council member moved to adopt Resolution R2025‑14 and authorize the mayor to sign the agreement; Councilman Adams seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Next steps: staff to finalize the IGA and coordinate with Navajo County and the contractor on scheduling and technical preparation before fall construction.
