Chandler advances design for community garden at 190 S. Dakota with CDBG funds reallocated

City staff updated the Chandler City Council on May 19 about plans to reinvigorate the community garden at 190 South Dakota Street, saying the city purchased the property in February 2008 and had leased it to Harvest for Humanities for 10 years.
Kim (staff member) told the council that the city has showcased several concepts to the Pueblo Viejo neighborhood, that j2 design is completing the garden design with anticipated delivery in early fall, and that the council approved Resolution 5,855 in December to reallocate Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to assist with design and construction.
The presentation said the operational structure is still being developed and will address safety, permitted uses, partnerships and neighborhood programming. Councilmember Faustin asked whether residents would have individual plots or shared beds; Kim said that is part of operations planning and that neighborhood participants will be able to engage in the beds, while city staff are also exploring classes and library programming.
Councilmember Encinas asked what features other successful gardens used; Kim said a recurring success factor is an on-site advocate or coordinator, active programming, and a safe neighborhood feel, citing a tour of a Fountain Hills garden as an example.
No formal vote was taken at the study session; staff said they will continue neighborhood outreach as design progresses.
