The Wausau Public Health and Safety Committee on May 19 approved a staff request to amend the city’s special-event application and policy to remove language that allowed reserving a quadrant of the 400 Block for private events.
Staff said the parks department does not practice fractional rentals of the 400 Block and finds the concept hard to manage and enforce. Committee members were told the 400 Block’s adjacency to public right-of-way creates operational challenges for cordoning small private events. The amendment also replaces specific fee amounts in the application with a reference to the city fee schedule so future fee changes do not require reapproval of the application.
Staff explained that when the 400 Block was created, designers and staff contemplated people renting portions of the block, including the stage, for small weddings or receptions; that option has seen very little demand. Parks staff told the committee they generally refer prospective renters to alternative venues. Following questions from committee members, Watson moved to approve the requested amendment; Lukens seconded and the motion passed with no opposition.
The committee directed staff to update the event application language to remove fractional-block reservations and to refer applicants to the city fee schedule. No changes to park programming or scheduling practices were announced beyond the application language update.
The committee recorded the change as an administrative amendment to the special-event application meant to align written policy with current parks practice and simplify future fee updates.
