Wausau committee approves routine liquor renewals and grants license to bartender applicant after rehabilitation letter

The Wausau Public Health and Safety Committee on May 19 approved the city’s 2025 batch of alcohol-license renewals and separately approved a retail bartender/operator license for Lindsay Adams after reviewing evidence of rehabilitation.

The approvals included Class A and Class B renewals and several special-event class B licenses recommended by staff and the subcommittee; the committee took separate action on Adams after she submitted a letter from her probation/parole agent documenting completion of several rehabilitative programs and partial completion of a multi‑year sentence-relation period.

The committee chair opened the meeting by noting two recommended denials and inviting any applicants to address the committee. Lindsay Adams appeared and told the committee she had submitted a letter from her probation/parole agent and a letter from an employer. The police chief said, after a brief review, that Adams “has been actively participating in her own rehabilitation” and that he would find evidence of rehabilitation exists, while cautioning that renewals are subject to future review. Committee members then moved to take the batch of renewals as recommended by staff, excluding Adams for separate consideration.

Committee member Larson moved to accept staff recommendations for the batch of licenses with the exception of Adams; Lukens seconded and the motion carried. Larson then moved to approve Lindsay Adams’ retail bartender/operator license; Watson seconded. Members voted in favor and the committee approved the license. The chair noted the committee’s action would proceed to the full council in June.

The packet and subcommittee recommendations also noted unanimous subcommittee approval of several Class B special-event licenses, including permits for Monk Botanical Garden, the new owner of the former Jalapeños (now Los Compadres Mexican Restaurant), and the transition of Oz nightclub to Emerald nightclub. One item, Truly’s Eatery and Bar, was pulled from the approval list and deferred to next month because staff recorded an intended conditional surrender that was not finalized.

No ordinance citation was named during the discussion; the chair referred generically to “our ordinance” that gives applicants recommended for denial the right to address the committee and submit evidence of rehabilitation.

The committee’s actions: most renewals and special-event Class B licenses were approved as recommended; the committee granted Adams’ retail license after considering the probation/parole agent’s letter and the chief’s recommendation. The committee recorded no recorded opposing votes on the motions.

The committee’s licensing decisions and the Adams approval were procedural and will appear on the council agenda for final action in June.
