Town building rehab nears key stages; electrical and drainage issues could raise costs

The Board of Selectmen received a construction update May 20 on a town building rehabilitation project that is progressing but has uncovered some unanticipated issues.
Peter Morsey, giving the project update, said roofing and steel work are scheduled to be finished by the end of the week and that demolition and many interior tasks have been completed. “The steel should be done by the end of the week. The roofers are on-site. They should be done by the end of the week. Gutters will come later. The demo are done,” Morsey said.
Morsey told the board crews are installing new mechanical feeds and that painters and carpenters are scheduled in coming weeks. He also said because the building dates from the 1950s, some electrical systems required updating and there are current drain issues that “may be a little more expensive than we hoped,” potentially creating financial constraints. Morsey said contractors, selectmen and building inspectors are discussing options.
Morsey thanked town staff for assistance and said the work is meant to support downtown revitalization alongside highway and DDC projects. No vote was taken; the update was informational and town staff will continue coordinating with contractors and inspectors as solutions and change orders, if any, are identified.
The board did not set a new completion date at the meeting, and Morsey cautioned that remaining unknowns — particularly drainage and electrical work — could affect the project budget and schedule.
