Needham working group pauses downtown demonstration, seeks more data and business input

Members of the Envision Freedom Center project working group met May 19 in Needham to review public feedback on a concept plan for Great Plain Avenue and to set next steps after the Select Board delayed a planned demonstration for at least six months.

The committee agreed to collect more data — including traffic modeling, a new parking analysis and possible economic-impact study — and to present a broader range of design options this summer before the group recommends whether to move forward with a grant-funded 12-month pilot.

“The Select Board has put a pause on the project, for a minimum of 6 months,” said Tim Bulger, chair of the working group, describing the directive the committee is using to reshape its timeline. The working group set three summer meetings: June 18, July 16 and Aug. 13, 2025, 5–7 p.m., to plan engagement and data-gathering.
